Baked French Toast
Ingredients:
- sourdough bread - 1 1/2 pounds
- eggs - 8
- milk - 2 cups
- heavy cream - 1/2 cup
- sugar - 3/4 cup
- vanilla extract - 2 T
- flour - 1/2 cup
- packed brown sugar - 1/2 cup
- cinnamon - 1 t
- salt - 1/4 t
- cold butter, cut into pieces - 1/2 cup plus butter for pan
Instructions:
Tear bread into bite size chunks and place evenly in a buttered 13 x 9 inch baking pan.
In a bowl, mix together eggs, milk, cream, sugar and vanilla, pour evenly over bread. Cover tightly, place in the refrigerator overnight.
Prepare topping -- in a bowl, mix together flour, brown sugar, cinnamon and salt. Using a pastry blender cut in the 1/2 cup butter until crumbly. Place mixture in a plastic bag, place in refrigerator. Just before baking, sprinkle crumb mixture evenly over the bread mixture.
Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 1 hour (or 45 minutes for soft and pudding-like).
